## Prevention of Child Marriage Hours Before Wedding in Egypt

Somaia Saad, General Director of the Child Protection Unit in Qena Governorate, announced the thwarting of a plan for the marriage of a 14-year-old girl today, Saturday, just hours before her wedding in a village in the Dishna Center, northern Qena.

In statements to the website "Cairo 24", Somaia Saad mentioned that the incident stemmed from a report received from the emergency services about the intention of the family of a minor girl named "Aya. H. A." to proceed with her wedding, in clear violation of the child law that prohibits the marriage of girls before the age of 18.

Somaia Saad indicated that the Child Protection Committee communicated with the child's family to persuade them to cancel the marriage until she reaches the legal age, educating them about the health and legal consequences of child marriage.

She explained that the marriage was halted after obtaining necessary pledges from the child's father to not allow her marriage before she turns 18, noting that the child will be monitored weekly to ensure that the marriage does not take place in secret.

The General Director of the Child Protection Unit in Qena emphasized that, in case of non-compliance, a memorandum will be submitted to the public prosecutor to take the necessary legal action.
