Israeli Chief of Staff Sets Condition for Resignation

Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi revealed in closed conversations that "if Israel moves towards a deal that leads to a halt of the war for several weeks, he will announce his resignation from his position." Sources told Channel 14 that "the Chief of Staff clarified that the objectives of the war in Gaza, which have not yet been achieved, include the return of hostages and the elimination of Hamas political bureau chief Yahya Sinwar." Halevi believes that the elimination of Sinwar is possible at a later time, and he affirmed that the Israeli security establishment will know how to deal with him when necessary. Regarding the return of hostages, the second objective, the Chief of Staff does not hide that this goal has become a top priority for him in recent months, a position he has reflected in cabinet meetings as well. Sources familiar with Halevi's stance noted that "this decision has been made by him and other officials who are expected to resign together with him." Halevi was quoted during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating that "there are conditions for the deal and it is appropriate to engage in negotiations to achieve the best possible outcome," adding that "regarding the Philadelphia corridor, I do not suggest that we make it an obstacle for the release of 30 prisoners in the initial phase." An Israeli army spokesperson responded to the report saying: "The Chief of Staff is currently fully focused on achieving the goals of the war and leading the Israeli army in the fight against our enemy, and he is not dealing with other issues."
