Kuwait and Iran Reestablish Official Contact Amid Tensions

In a significant diplomatic move, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with his Kuwaiti counterpart, Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah. This marked the first publicly acknowledged communication between Kuwait and Iran since the outbreak of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran in February.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Minister Al-Sabah expressed his country's hope that the Memorandum of Understanding between the US and Iran would bolster regional security and stability, ensure the security and free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and address unresolved issues through sustainable political and diplomatic solutions.

Al-Sabah emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. He underscored the necessity of respecting national sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, avoiding internal interference, and resolving conflicts peacefully without resorting to threats or force.

Moreover, the Kuwaiti Minister called for a cessation of support to proxies, asserting that this is fundamental to enhancing security and stability and solidifying the mutual interests of the region's peoples and states.

For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi provided details of the US-Iran understanding and discussed key developments related to it. He expressed optimism that the agreement would help restore stability and calm in the region.

Araghchi highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and consultation between Iran and the Gulf states, noting that direct communication among regional parties is an effective means of dispelling ambiguity, misunderstanding, and promoting joint cooperation opportunities.

The two ministers also addressed several bilateral and regional issues, agreeing to continue diplomatic consultations in the coming phase to enhance bilateral relations and support regional stability.

This call came in the wake of rapid developments following the signing of the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, which has been implemented to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and initiate a new phase of political and security negotiations in the region.
