Al Jazeera Journalist Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Gaza's Bureij Refugee Camp

Al Jazeera Mubasher photographer Ahmed Washah was killed on Saturday in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a courtyard in the Bureij Refugee Camp in the central Gaza Strip. The strike also claimed the lives of two other individuals.

Washah's death occurs amidst ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has seen a significant number of journalists and media workers killed while performing their duties in recent months.

Ahmed Washah joins a list of journalists from the Al Jazeera Media Network who have lost their lives covering the events in Gaza. His brother, journalist Muhammad Washah, was killed in a separate airstrike earlier this year, as the network announced at that time.

International organizations concerned with press freedom note that the Gaza conflict has one of the highest journalist casualty rates in recent conflicts. These organizations are consistently calling for independent investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of media professionals and field workers.

Rights and media organizations stress that protecting journalists during armed conflicts is a fundamental obligation under international humanitarian law. They urge for securing the safety of media personnel and enabling them to perform their professional duties without being targeted.

Journalists in Gaza continue to work under extremely difficult conditions amid ongoing bombardments and deteriorating humanitarian and security situations. International calls for the protection of civilians and media workers are increasing.
