Hôtel-Dieu Hospital Highlights Sustainable Development Initiatives

On June 23, 2026, Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital launched its second corporate social responsibility report for 2024–2026. The event was dedicated to social responsibility and sustainable development, showcasing the initiatives and projects executed by the institution and its teams.

The event was attended by Minister of the Environment Ms. Tamara Al-Zein, UN Global Compact Network Lebanon Director Ms. Dima Fakhr, President of St. Joseph University of Beirut, Chairman of Hôtel-Dieu de France, Professor François Bouadec, and General Manager of the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital Network Nassib Nasr, alongside partners and representatives of the hospital's administrative, medical, and nursing staffs.

This gathering highlighted key achievements and initiatives that align with Hôtel-Dieu de France's social and environmental responsibility strategy for 2024–2026. Emphasis was placed on collaborative efforts and resource management to enhance environmental, social, and institutional impact.

Through the initiatives carried out during this period, Hôtel-Dieu renewed its commitment to incorporating sustainable development principles across its operations, reinforcing its status as a model institution for social responsibility in Lebanon.

Mr. Nassib Nasr affirmed that social responsibility is central to Hôtel-Dieu's mission, especially amid ongoing challenges in Lebanon's healthcare sector. He explained that the second social and environmental report for 2024–2025, and into 2026, reflects collective efforts from the hospital team and significant growth in initiatives serving patients and the community.

He noted efforts to improve healthcare access had enabled the hospital to attend to approximately 50,000 patients over the past two years. Mr. Nasr emphasized that social responsibility is a collective duty, praising staff commitment across the healthcare network. He discussed enhanced collaboration with the UN Global Compact Network Lebanon, especially in projects aiming to reduce food waste, announcing three new awards within the hospital to honor outstanding initiatives in social and environmental responsibility.

Following a video presentation of projects and initiatives from 2024 to 2026, Ms. Dima Fakhr praised Hôtel-Dieu's commitment to sustainability issues, highlighting the institution's pioneering and forward-looking vision. She reviewed the role of the UN Global Compact in uniting over 24,000 companies and institutions around principles of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption to achieve sustainable development goals.

She stressed the pivotal role of institutions in driving societal transformation amidst global crises. Regarding the healthcare sector, she noted that sustainability encompasses governance, ethics, inclusivity, resource management, and improving workplace quality of life.

Ms. Fakhr emphasized the importance of embedding sustainability culture across all teams and departments, expressing satisfaction with the partnership with Hôtel-Dieu while reaffirming the value of trust-based cooperation for a more sustainable future.

Professor François Bouadec reminded attendees that social responsibility is part of the institution's identity since its inception. Recalling Father Chantour's words during the 1922 cornerstone-laying of Hôtel-Dieu, he stated the core mission is to serve humanity with competence, compassion, and responsibility.

He stressed maintaining this humanitarian mission through quality healthcare, supporting vulnerable groups, advancing education and research, and community service. Social responsibility principles should not be mere communication tools or extra burdens but central to the institution's mission.

He lauded the importance of the 2024-2026 social and environmental responsibility report, recognizing the dedicated efforts benefiting patients, society, and the environment. Hôtel-Dieu reaffirms its commitment to developing a sustainable, ethical, and inclusive healthcare model, recognizing that while science heals and innovation transforms, humanity bestows the hospital's mission with true meaning.

Minister Tamara Al-Zein emphasized her strong ties with Hôtel-Dieu, commending the high-quality healthcare provided and the dedication of the hospital staff. She noted that despite Lebanon's ongoing crises, the institution has consistently prioritized human and medical values driven by humanism, trust, compassion, and listening, beyond mere performance metrics.

Ms. Al-Zein stressed that every patient is foremost a person with individual needs, expressing pride in the hospital's pivotal role in Lebanon's healthcare system. Regarding the collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and the hospital, she praised the quality, accuracy, and professionalism of the hospital's medical waste management files.

In her concluding remarks, Ms. Al-Zein called for enhanced integration and cooperation among public institutions, hospitals, universities, and local authorities to cement a sustainable environmental culture and reinforce responsible citizenship.

The event concluded with an award ceremony honoring several initiatives developed within the institution, awarding three accolades for exemplary projects and practices. The Environmental and Social Responsibility Team Award acknowledged the eco-friendly operating room team's pioneering initiative, the Innovation Award for New and Promising Ideas Supporting Sustainable Development was given to the Technical Services Department, while the 'Small Step, Big Impact' Award was reserved for the Nutrition Department's simple initiatives that have achieved significant, positive results.

The ceremony ended with a friendly cocktail event where participants exchanged views and experiences, fostering communication that expands collaboration opportunities and supports Hôtel-Dieu's social responsibility and sustainable development initiatives.
