Teachers Union Condemns Celebration of Exam Cancellations as a Serious Decline in Lebanon's Education

The Teachers Union has expressed deep regret over the celebratory scenes witnessed in some parts of Beirut following the decision to cancel official exams. The Union considers this a disrespect to Lebanese education, its history, and the educational community in all its forms. According to the Union’s statement, the decision was made by Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Rima Karami due to unavoidable educational, administrative, and security circumstances. However, the street celebrations following this decision reflect a dangerous decline in attitudes towards education and official certificates.
The Union described this behavior as not merely incidental but indicative of a deeper crisis within the educational system. It questions the image intended for Lebanese students and the shift in students’ perception of academic achievement’s value. The statement blamed political authorities for the deterioration of the education sector, suggesting that years of erratic policies have undermined the value of the Lebanese certificate in the minds of students and the public, leading to a situation where exam cancellations are celebrated.
The Union concluded with a call to restore respect for Lebanese schools and official exams, emphasizing a culture of effort and achievement, distancing from populism and improvisation.
