North Korean media report that Leader Kim Jong-un supervised a series of new weapon tests, including an upgraded missile platform and advanced artillery systems. These trials coincided with the 76th anniversary of the Korean War, interpreted by analysts as a show of force and capability to target key facilities in the South.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, the tests included an evaluation of an upgraded 240mm multiple rocket launcher system with 24 tubes. Additionally, there was testing of warheads for tactical ballistic missiles and accuracy measurements for long-range shells of 155mm self-propelled howitzers.
The agency stated that the new launcher is equipped with an independent precision guidance system, with a range of approximately 90 kilometers, enhancing its effectiveness in military operations. Artillery shells with a range of 65 kilometers were also tested.
Pyongyang confirmed that the developed warheads are designed to target strategic facilities such as airports, ports, and energy infrastructure.
Kim expressed satisfaction with the test results, noting that they reflect significant technological advancement in weaponry systems amid changes in the deployment pattern of firepower near the southern border.
He added that keeping "enemies in constant anxiety" is a crucial component of deterrence strategy, affirming that North Korea is working to replace its long-range offensive means with more advanced versions.
These moves come amid ongoing tensions, as North Korea has classified its southern neighbor as the "main enemy" since late 2023, declaring inter-Korean relations as hostile between two states.
