President Donald Trump has accused Iran of breaching a ceasefire agreement following its announcement of launching four attack drones toward commercial ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz. One of the drones reportedly hit a cargo ship causing material damage, while U.S. forces managed to shoot down the other three.
Trump criticized the attack as a "foolish violation" of the memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran, asserting that the United States will not tolerate threats to free navigation in one of the world's most strategic maritime corridors.
This comes after American and British reports indicated a cargo ship was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz, causing limited damage to the bridge with no injuries reported. Although Iran has not officially claimed responsibility for the incident, previous warnings from the Revolutionary Guard urged adherence to routes dictated by Tehran.
Following the attack, the International Maritime Organization has suspended a plan to evacuate hundreds of ships and over 11,000 sailors stranded in the Gulf region, emphasizing that navigation safety will remain a priority until the security situation becomes clearer. This decision comes amid ongoing disputes between Washington and Tehran over the future management of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the implementation of the memorandum of understanding.
