Axios has reported, citing informed sources, that U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at potentially reneging on the agreements reached with Russia during the Alaska Summit. These agreements include proposals concerning the future of the Donbas region as part of any potential settlement of the war in Ukraine.
This comes after statements from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who confirmed that President Vladimir Putin discussed with Trump during the Alaska Summit, American proposals regarding Ukraine, which were agreed upon by the Russian side. Lavrov regarded U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's denial of any agreements as inconsistent with the summit's outcomes.
Rubio had earlier stated that the Alaska meeting did not result in any conclusive agreements but was limited to exchanging proposals concerning the Ukrainian crisis.
According to Axios, in private conversations Trump indicated that he might abandon the understandings that included American acceptance of a Russian demand concerning control over Donbas within the framework of any future agreement.
The website quoted an unnamed American official suggesting that Trump’s statements imply possible pressure tactics on Moscow but noted that several leaders do not believe the U.S. President will actually take steps in that direction.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow has observed what she described as “deviation” in the handling of the outcomes from the Alaska Summit, considering that some of the agreements reached remain unimplemented.
Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held a summit in Anchorage, Alaska, where they discussed ways to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Following the meeting, Putin expressed his country's readiness to achieve a long-term settlement for the crisis.
