The Qatari capital, Doha, continues to play a pivotal role in mediating efforts between the United States and Iran. Ongoing technical meetings aim to cement the memorandum of understanding signed by both sides amid regional and international efforts to reduce tension and enhance stability in the region.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari confirmed that U.S. envoys Stephen Whitcroft and Jared Kushner are in Doha for meetings with mediators and to follow up on negotiation progress. He noted that technical meetings between the American and Iranian delegations are ongoing and that mediation efforts continue to advance the dialogue to more progressive stages.
Al-Ansari explained that the current priority is to restore regional security and stability, highlighting the activation of a direct communication line to de-escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Efforts are also being made to clear mines and secure maritime navigation, emphasizing that freedom of passage in the strait is a priority for regional countries.
On the economic front, the Qatari official revealed that the $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds have not yet been released, noting that the mechanism for their transfer will remain contingent upon the agreements reached between Washington and Tehran during ongoing negotiations.
Iran, on its part, emphasized the need for the United States to fully commit to the terms of the memorandum of understanding, including halting escalation on all fronts. It underscored that any breach of the agreement would negatively impact negotiation progress. Iran also clarified that the Strait of Hormuz issue remains part of its sovereign responsibilities while continuing coordination with mediators on unresolved issues.
These developments occur in the context of ongoing Qatari mediation, with participation from regional partners, aiming to transform the current understandings into a permanent agreement that enhances regional security and prevents the return of military escalation in the area.
