Trump Criticizes Supreme Court Ruling on Birthright Citizenship

U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the right to birthright citizenship, calling on Congress to take legislative action to amend the legal status after the court rejected his executive order aimed at restricting this right.

Trump stated on the "Truth Social" platform that the Supreme Court "upheld birthright citizenship, which is unfortunate for our country," suggesting that Congress could address the issue by passing new legislation. He also mocked in another comment saying, "I congratulate President Xi and China on the great victory for birthright citizenship."

Meanwhile, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his disappointment with the ruling, affirming his rejection of the Supreme Court's decision to continue the practice of birthright citizenship.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled the executive order issued by Trump upon his return to the White House unconstitutional, asserting that the 14th Amendment guarantees American citizenship for all children born on U.S. soil, except for specific and recognized cases under the law.

Chief Justice John Roberts explained in the judgment rationale that the concept of citizenship represents one of the entrenched constitutional principles, noting that the framers of the 14th Amendment intended to widen the scope of this right to include everyone born freely within the United States, emphasizing that the court is committed to maintaining this constitutional guarantee.
