President Jozef Aoun, during a meeting with a delegation from the Maronite League, emphasized that the visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister to Lebanon today dispels concerns surrounding any intentions by Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa to interfere in Lebanese affairs. He stated that the visit aims to establish cordial relations between the two countries grounded in mutual respect and non-interference in internal matters.
Aoun explained that the Syrian delegation emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation through constitutional institutions, essentially "state-to-state", avoiding engagement with any Lebanese party separately.
The President assured that the framework agreement does not contradict Lebanese rights and principles but is designed to safeguard them, asserting that negotiation is the safest and least costly option for Lebanon following its incurred losses. He added, “Negotiations are not betrayal; they represent diplomatic warfare without bloodshed,” urging everyone to respect the state’s decision in this matter.
Aoun highlighted that Lebanon’s interest lies in preserving American and international support, notably from Europe and the Gulf, to reach a resolution that secures its rights. He affirmed that it is time for Lebanon to move beyond wars and proxy influences, noting that the majority of Lebanese, particularly those in the south, aspire to live with dignity and security.
He emphasized that Lebanon “will not relinquish any inch of its land,” calling for judgment of the state’s performance based on its implementation, while also appreciating the efforts of the Lebanese civil and military negotiating delegation in Washington, D.C.
Meanwhile, Maronite League President Maroun Helou asserted that the current phase necessitates rallying around the state, the army, and constitutional institutions, supporting every national effort aimed at solidifying full sovereignty and ensuring that the state alone holds the decision of war and peace.
Helou reiterated the league’s support for President Aoun, expressing confidence in his role as a unifying national leader in managing state affairs and negotiations according to the constitution, free from external pressures or dictates.
