U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his criticisms of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) today, stating on his platform, Truth Social, "The United States spends more money on NATO than any other country by far, to protect it, without deriving any benefit from it."
He added that America spent $999 billion, whereas the United Kingdom spent $90.5 billion, France $66.5 billion, Italy $48.8 billion, and Poland $44.3 billion. Other countries, including Germany, spend significantly less. He concluded by calling this issue "unbelievable."
Not the First Time
This isn't the first time the U.S. President has criticized the defense alliance. Since taking office for his second term, he has consistently directed criticisms at NATO, demanding that it increase defense spending. He has even suggested multiple times that the U.S. might withdraw from the alliance.
Trump has hinted at the possibility of not providing military aid to any NATO member country if requested. His criticisms intensified with the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump urged NATO countries to assist in reopening this vital and strategic maritime passage; however, most European nations refused, further aggravating his discontent with them and the alliance.
