The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported that the United States proposed to Iran to abandon plans to impose shipping fees through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the release of some of Iran's frozen assets.
According to the sources, U.S. Special Envoy Stev Weitkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of then-President Donald Trump, visited Doha this week to discuss ways to break the stalemate in negotiations with Qatari intermediaries.
The report states that Washington offered Tehran an arrangement to relinquish control over the strait and forgo charging fees on ships, in return for accessing a portion of the Iranian assets, roughly valued at $100 billion, frozen abroad.
The sources indicated that Iran rejected the proposal, maintaining its stance on the right to control the Strait of Hormuz, while its military threatened tough measures against ships that deviate from Tehran-approved routes.
