Yehiel Leiter, Israel's Ambassador to the United States, announced during a meeting with the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington that the next round of discussions between Israel and Lebanon, the sixth in the series, will take place on July 15 and 16 in Rome. He added that the meeting would be conducted at the ambassadorial level.
Leiter also mentioned that Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on July 21, as reported by the Israeli newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth."
It is notable that on June 26, Lebanon signed a trilateral framework agreement with the United States and Israel, attended by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, following the fifth round of direct negotiations with Israel in Washington.
The agreement outlines the implementation of two pilot zones including an Israeli withdrawal, the deployment of the Lebanese army, and the disarmament of non-state armed groups, specifically referencing Hezbollah.
The security track between Lebanon and Israel began at the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) on May 29, with military delegations from both countries participating.
In related news, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam discussed preparations for implementing the framework agreement signed in Washington with Lebanon and Israel with Army Commander Major General Rudolf Heikal on Monday.
Salam received Heikal and "discussed preparations for implementing the framework resulting from the Washington negotiations, particularly starting Israel’s withdrawal from the pilot zones," according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office.
The agreement between Beirut and Tel Aviv has sparked internal divisions in Lebanon, with both supporters and detractors.
