Countdown Begins for Lebanese Army Deployment in Israeli Withdrawal Areas

Countdown Begins for Lebanese Army Deployment in Israeli Withdrawal Areas

In a new development regarding security agreements between Lebanon and Israel, an Israeli report has revealed that the Lebanese army is preparing a broad plan to enter two areas in southern Lebanon, from which the Israeli army is set to withdraw. This is described as a "trial phase" of implementing the framework agreement between the two sides.

According to journalist Nitzan Shapira's report broadcasted on Israel's "Channel 12," the Lebanese army has begun extensive planning for the trial phase, during which it is expected to deploy in two southern Lebanese areas vacated by the Israeli army. This deployment is anticipated in the coming days.

The report indicates that the Lebanese army is currently assessing the required size of forces for the mission, their deployment mechanism, and the entry points into the areas. The information shared with Israel suggests that the deployment will occur simultaneously in both regions, rather than gradually.

However, the report confirms that no final timetable has been agreed upon for this step, noting that this issue will be discussed in upcoming meetings between the two sides next week.

An American official quoted in the report stated, "The implementation of the framework agreement has already begun," adding, "The first phase's region will be launched within a few days, while other areas are currently undergoing surveying and planning in preparation for inclusion in subsequent phases."

In a similar context, the report noted CNN's reference to a diplomatic source who indicated that President Michel Aoun tied Lebanon's continued participation in talks with Israel to the Israeli army's withdrawal from areas it still controls in southern Lebanon.

This report surfaces as international communications regarding the implementation of security understandings continue, with anticipation about whether the trial phase will pave the way for expanding the Lebanese army's deployment in areas from which the Israeli army withdraws, under a process overseen by the United States.
