Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has joined the chorus of criticism against Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti following Brazil's exit from the 2026 World Cup at the last 16 stage, making scornful remarks.
During a visit to the "MAWW" Technological Institute in São Paulo, Lula commented on a student's project that involved designing a football-playing robot, seizing the moment to make a jest at the expense of the 'Seleção' coach.
The Brazilian President said, "I will show this robot to Ancelotti. It appears as fierce as Mbappé or Haaland and kicks remarkably well. Perhaps he should recruit it, as it might be capable of bringing the World Cup back to Brazil."
Lula's criticism did not stop there. He went on to denounce how the national team's return was handled after their World Cup exit, noting that the official team plane brought only one player back to Brazil—defender Danilo—while other players and staff opted to travel directly to vacation destinations.
He added, "That's disgraceful. The national team went to the World Cup with a large delegation, but only one player returned on the official plane."
The Brazilian President's comments come at a time when pressure is mounting on Ancelotti, who took charge with hopes of reclaiming the World Cup title that has eluded Brazil since 2002. However, Brazil's journey was cut short following a defeat to Norway in the round of 16.
Lula had previously criticized Ancelotti, including ridiculing the decision to call up Neymar, given his limited match involvement.
Despite Ancelotti's contract extending until 2030, the early World Cup exit has sparked speculation about his future, amidst public and media calls for changes in the Brazilian national team's coaching leadership.
