The crisis surfaced after Netanyahu strongly condemned the comments by Rabbi Landau, the spiritual leader of the 'Degel HaTorah' faction, who critiqued elements within religious Zionism advocating for military service and the drafting of yeshiva students.
Netanyahu stated that Israeli Defense Forces fighters, whether religious, secular, or Haredi, sacrifice their lives defending the state and deserve respect and support from all sectors of society. He rejected what he termed 'shocking' statements against soldiers.
Marrariv suggested that Netanyahu's stance carried political implications beyond supporting the soldiers. It marked a direct confrontation with Rabbi Landau, who has recently been escalating tensions against the government over the draft issue, calling for the dissolution of the Knesset due to losing trust in the Prime Minister, as per the newspaper's report.
