Waseem Al-Ghawi, the attorney representing former Central Bank of Lebanon Governor Riad Salameh, issued the following statement:
In response to media leaks regarding the health status of the former governor, it has been clarified that Mr. Salameh is experiencing unstable and chronic health conditions, discrediting reports that merely cite blood pressure fluctuations. His family emphasizes the necessity for ongoing medical care, supported by his attending physician’s recommendations, due to his heightened risk of severe complications stemming from the denial of proper hospital treatment. This situation presents significant risk as verified by a court-appointed medical committee, indicating a potential for life-threatening developments at any time.
Denying Mr. Salameh access to intensive medical supervision constitutes a grave violation of his procedural rights and could impair the judicial investigation. Despite extensive cooperation over several months and the provision of all requested documentation by Mr. Salameh, misrepresentations to the public persist. His detention relates to loans granted by the Central Bank during the 2010 global financial crisis. These loans were collective council decisions, safeguarding financial stability, and resulted in substantial profits for the bank post-repayment.
The Salameh family appeals to the judiciary for safeguarding his right to life and health. They assert that true justice will be served by unveiling the truth and ensuring legal protections that uphold the rights to defense and life.
