The Moroccan Ministry of Interior has reported that 40,000 individuals attempted to cross into the city of Ceuta, with an additional 1,135 trying to reach Melilla.
A spokesperson for the Ministry stated in a communiqué that these figures are based on 'accurate statistical data available to the competent authorities, relying on monitoring and field tracking systems at the participants' points of departure.'
The ministry emphasized that these numbers are derived from precise statistical and field data obtained through approved monitoring techniques, making them the official reference, contrary to some circulated figures that lack credible data or objective foundations, as per the statement.
The statement noted that individuals were facilitated in their return, 'as part of ongoing cooperation with the Spanish authorities and in accordance with current proceedings,' by opening crossings for those wishing to return voluntarily, which 'helped gradually restore normalcy to the area.'
The Moroccan Interior Ministry reported 11 deaths associated with irregular migration attempts, including 10 drownings and one fall near Ceuta.
Regarding reports of additional deaths in Ceuta, the statement said Moroccan authorities continue to verify these claims and the actual number, identities, and nationalities of those involved through official coordination channels with Spanish authorities, with the aim of completing the necessary legal, administrative, and humanitarian processes.
The ministry clarified that the incidents in Ceuta and Melilla were not spontaneous or circumstantial but were the result of several intertwined factors, including the misleading use of digital space, dissemination of false information, human trafficking networks, and misinterpretations of legal and administrative data, all aimed at creating the illusion of easy, consequence-free access to European territory.
The ministry asserted Morocco's commitment to strengthening international cooperation and coordination in combating irregular migration and human trafficking.
The relevant public prosecutor has launched judicial investigations into these events 'to determine all circumstances, unveil responsibilities, and impose legal consequences, in accordance with law provisions,' the statement concluded.
