The redeployment of Syrian military forces along the borders with Lebanon and Iraq has aroused widespread concern and debate. Fears have surfaced about potential clashes between Syrian government forces and factions loyal to Iran, such as Hezbollah or Iraqi groups like the Popular Mobilization Forces or Kata'ib Hezbollah.
This military presence coincides with statements from U.S. President Donald Trump expressing a desire to assist Syria in dismantling Hezbollah's weapons. Consequently, questions have arisen about whether new Syrian authorities are preparing for the potential military operation.
In a press interview, Ahmed Moufaq Zaidan, advisor to Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara, clarified that the aim is to “control” the Syrian borders in a “volatile” region. He emphasized there is no reason for any state to fear.
Zaidan added, “We are experiencing a moment of friendly relations, whether at the level of Syrian components or with Syria's neighbors. Over the past two years, Syria has set exemplary standards for healthy relationships, both internally and with neighboring countries.”
