Indonesia's Sumatra experienced a significant seismic event as a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the western island on Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This event came just hours after a potent 7.7 magnitude quake hit the Southeast Asian country.
The epicenter of the recent tremor was located in Pematangsiantar, approximately 126 kilometers southeast of the island's capital, Medan. Fortunately, no tsunami warning was issued for this quake.
The earlier, more powerful quake that struck the eastern region earlier in the day resulted in the tragic loss of 38 lives.
The U.S. observatory pinpointed the earlier quake's epicenter off the northern coast of the island, about 68 kilometers northwest of Andi province, at a shallow depth of only 10 kilometers.
