US President Donald Trump announced that Kim Jong Un has responded to his recent initiatives, following Trump's decision to scale back military exercises with South Korea and praise his relationship with the North Korean leader.
Trump stated that he is making the situation "much safer" through his relationship with Kim, whom he met three times during his first presidential term. However, no meetings have taken place during his current, non-consecutive term.
While praising the leader of nuclear-capable North Korea, Trump criticized ally Seoul for not supporting Washington in the fight against Iran, which the Republican billionaire argues is aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear bomb.
When asked why Kim has not responded to his requests for talks since returning to the White House last year, Trump said to reporters in the Oval Office: "How do you know he hasn’t responded?" When pressed further on whether Kim had indeed replied, Trump affirmed, "Yes, he has."
When questioned about the stage of talks with Kim, Trump described them as "very positive" but did not delve into details.
Praising Kim, Trump stated that their relationship has reduced tensions.
Trump remarked: "I am actually making things much safer. Kim Jong Un has always treated me with great respect," adding, "I understand him. And he understands me."
