Kataeb Party Warns Hezbollah Against Dragging Lebanon into Conflict Again

The Kataeb Party's political bureau held its regular meeting chaired by the party leader, MP Sami Gemayel, to discuss the latest political developments.

In a statement, they warned, "Hezbollah against dragging Lebanon back into a cycle of escalation and war, especially following threats from its Secretary-General before the end of the Iranian-American memorandum of understanding term, and attempts to disrupt the state's efforts to rescue Lebanon from the repercussions of wars it has been embroiled in. Meanwhile, Iranian Shura Council Chairman Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf reveals the continuation of direct communication with fighters on the front lines in Lebanon, further confirming the extent of Iranian interference in Lebanese affairs and the ongoing treatment of Lebanon as an Iranian sphere of influence."

The bureau emphasized that "Lebanon cannot afford to return to wars that only the Lebanese pay for with their lives, security, stability, and economy."

They called on "the executive authority to fully assume its responsibilities and take all necessary measures to implement its decisions regarding the restriction of weapons to state control, as it is the only gateway to protect Lebanon's sovereignty and prevent any party from dragging it into confrontations without the state's mandate." They affirmed that "Hezbollah, by keeping its weapons outside state authority and threatening to reopen fronts, invites occupation and deepens the suffering of the Lebanese, exacerbating displacement and destruction."

The party opposed "any new tax increases or measures that add burdens on citizens before completing the necessary structural reforms, primarily reforming state institutions, stopping waste, tax evasion, and illegal economy, and addressing the sources of financial imbalances. It is not permissible to impose additional burdens on the Lebanese while fundamental reforms remain suspended."

The bureau praised "the approval to abolish the death penalty as a progressive legislative step in line with the protection of the right to life and the evolution of the human rights system."

They renewed "the Kataeb Party's position rejecting the current formulation of the amnesty law," stressing that "addressing grievances and relieving the deserving should occur without turning amnesty into a means for impunity or expanding the scope of its beneficiaries at the expense of justice and the rule of law."
