Israeli ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, has expressed support for any international movements aimed at strengthening the Lebanese army's capabilities. He regards this support as essential for setting the stage for Israeli troops to withdraw from southern Lebanon, but emphasizes that such backing must translate into concrete actions on the ground.
Zarka's remarks came in response to questions regarding an upcoming preparatory meeting in Paris, which is setting the stage for an international conference to support the Lebanese army. He noted that steps to reinforce the military institution and aid the withdrawal plan would be seen as "a step in the right direction."
Conversely, Zarka stressed that Israel is not satisfied with what he described as mere promises and statements. He insisted on the necessity of taking practical measures on the ground and highlighted the importance of preventing "Hezbollah" from regaining its ability to threaten Israel.
Previously, the Lebanese Presidency announced a preparatory meeting on September 17 in Paris, which will include chiefs of staff, experts, and representatives from governments and international organizations. This meeting is part of the preparations for a conference dedicated to supporting and enhancing the Lebanese army's capabilities.
This initiative occurs amid ongoing international efforts to support the Lebanese military institution, alongside discussions about the security situation in the south and the deployment of the Lebanese army, especially as the tenure of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is set to conclude by the end of 2026.
