Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed to America's Axios that Russia has indicated its willingness to initiate negotiations over the war in Ukraine, hinting at a potential 'de-escalation' during the winter season.
In the interview, Zelensky mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin 'needs Trump' and does not wish to 'anger him', especially ahead of the early November midterm elections.
Thus, the Kremlin has shown a 'willingness for dialogue', according to Zelensky, citing confirmations from American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who visited both Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend to meet with the presidents.
A subsequent Axios report noted that one of the pathways proposed by Washington to commence peace talks is the possibility of 'de-escalation' before or during the winter.
Zelensky told the site: 'There are thoughts regarding energy, grain, electricity, as well as oil and gas.'
Infrastructure associated with these sectors has emerged as a primary target for the daily mutual attacks by both parties.
On Monday, Witkoff estimated that his tour had achieved 'significant progress' towards organizing tripartite talks to conclude the conflict sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Trump, elected in 2024, had campaigned with a promise to swiftly end the war in Ukraine, an endeavor that has yet to be accomplished.
