Heritage Auctions announced on Saturday that a shirt worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan while playing for the University of North Carolina during the 1982-1983 season was sold for a record $1.38 million at a public auction. Sales director Chris Ivy stated, "We are very proud to break the record for a shirt worn by Jordan," according to Euronews.
To understand the value of the blue and white number 23 jersey, it is essential to note that it was the same shirt Jordan wore in a photo on the cover of Sports Illustrated in March 1983, which recognized the future Chicago Bulls star as the best player in college basketball at that time.
The same jersey fetched $63,500 when it was sold at auction in 1999, and Heritage had predicted it would sell for about $1 million this time. The previous record for the sale of Jordan's jersey and shorts was $480,000 in October, during the sale of a Bulls warm-up suit from the 1986-1987 season, in which he was the league's top scorer and was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics.
