New Coronavirus Variant in Russia

New Coronavirus Variant in Russia

Russian media reported today, Thursday, that Russia has recorded some cases of a new mutated strain of the coronavirus believed to be more contagious than the Delta variant. Meanwhile, India announced it has administered a billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, marking a milestone for the South Asian nation. According to Camille Khafizov, a lead researcher at the Consumer Protection Agency, a government body, the strain "AY.2.4" is likely to spread widely. This could lead to a rise in new COVID-19 cases, which have already reached record levels in Russia. President Vladimir Putin approved an order this week to close workplaces for a week at the beginning of November, after daily coronavirus-related deaths across Russia reached a new record of 1,028 yesterday, along with 34,073 new infections.
