"The Beauty of Baghdad": Relatives of Norzan Al-Shammari Discuss Her Real Killer

Hours after the Iraqi Ministry of Interior denied any sexual assault on the beautiful girl who took her last breaths after being killed by three men near the Jadriya Bridge in central Baghdad, the relatives of the girl Rosan Al-Shammari spoke about who was behind her murder. So far, the authorities have not released the forensic report to clarify the circumstances of the crime, but the victim's relatives, Noor Al-Huda (or Norzan), including her aunt and two of her children, accused an uncle of killing her after previously threatening her for refusing to marry his son, according to their claims.

In a video, which the "Al-Hurra" website could not verify, one of her aunt's children stated that Rosan sent him details of her uncle's threats against her, requesting that the relevant authorities consider this testimony during the investigations. According to her relatives, the young girl (20 years old) had suffered domestic violence, as she was forced to marry for the first time at the age of 13. After her divorce, she was compelled to marry a mentally unstable person who was accustomed to beating her. In her third marriage, her uncle forced her to marry his son after she divorced, but she "received several threats due to her refusal to marry her cousin," as mentioned by her cousin.

After the video went viral, Norzan's relatives, living outside Iraq, stated in another video released by Rudaw Network that they received threats from the girl's uncles. Iraqis expressed their shock at the news of the girl's murder, which spread widely on social media. The Ministry of Interior issued a statement on Thursday, saying: "From the first moments of receiving news of the girl's murder, a team of experts and investigators was formed to identify the perpetrators of her murder." It added that "initial information suggests that the crime was committed by three individuals with a knife." It denied that the girl had been sexually assaulted, saying, "as preliminary information, there is no sexual assault on the girl, as the crime was committed in the street, and we are waiting for the forensic report."
