Libyan Interior Ministry Reveals Details of Assassination Attempt on Interior Minister

The Ministry of Interior of the Libyan Government of National Accord revealed details about the assassination attempt on Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha, following an armed attack on his convoy.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page earlier today, the Ministry of Interior announced that on Sunday, February 21, at 3:00 PM, Minister Fathi Ali Bashagha was targeted in an assassination attempt while returning to his residence in Janzour. The statement noted that an armed armored vehicle directly opened fire on the minister's convoy using machine guns. It emphasized that the security personnel assigned to guard the convoy engaged with the vehicle and apprehended the armed group after a confrontation.

As a result of the assassination attempt, one of the minister's accompanying security personnel was injured, and two attackers were arrested, while the third attacker died during the security engagement. The ministry confirmed the minister's safety and that he was unharmed, reiterating its commitment along with all security agencies to continue performing their duties. Earlier, sources within the Libyan Ministry of Interior told Sputnik that Minister Fathi Bashagha survived an assassination attempt in which his convoy came under gunfire in western Tripoli.

One of Bashagha's companions informed "Libya Al-Ahrar" that "a vehicle driven by four armed men intercepted Bashagha's convoy in Janzour, leading to an exchange of gunfire with the convoy's security, resulting in the death of one attacker and injury to another, while the other two were apprehended."
