Fire Devours Historic Church in Egypt

A massive fire broke out early Saturday morning at the Church of the Virgin Mary and Archangel Michael in Assiut, Egypt. The Coptic Orthodox Church stated in a statement that "the incident was caused by a leak from a gas pipe used in the preparation of the Eucharist." They noted that "the fire occurred around four o’clock in the morning and completely consumed the church and its annexes, as they are made of wood, including the historic church which consists of wooden walls and ceilings." The statement emphasized that "there were no casualties, nor damage to the neighboring houses or schools."
