UAE Tightens Insurance Rules for Ships to Reduce Oil Spill Incidents

The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure issued a circular on June 2, mandating protection and indemnity clubs to provide additional information and evidence to regulatory authorities when insuring ships flying the UAE flag.

These additional requirements from ship insurance companies aim to enhance environmental safety amid growing concerns regarding unregulated shipping activities. The International Group of P&I Clubs covers 90% of ships sailing the oceans.

Hessa Al Malek, the Minister's Advisor for Maritime Transport at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, stated: "The ministry is keen on enhancing the national maritime economy and stimulating its development and advancement," pointing out the provision of the highest levels of safety, securing financial rights for the concerned parties, and environmental supervision of maritime activities through the application of the highest standards for regulating the activities of protection and indemnity clubs, which supports investment attractiveness, partnerships, and an ideal business environment.

The agency mentioned that "the new standards will contribute to reducing the risks of ships facing accidents and oil spills and will protect the marine environment while enhancing the safety of lives and marine assets."
