The Swedish prosecution authority stated today that "it will be difficult to identify the culprit behind the Nord Stream pipeline explosion." Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said in a statement, "We hope to be able to identify the perpetrator of this crime, but it should be noted that this is likely to be difficult given the circumstances. We are working unconditionally, leaving no effort spared and nothing to chance," pointing out that "there is a lot of information and reports regarding the sabotage of the pipelines." Russia previously failed to persuade the United Nations Security Council to conduct an independent investigation into the explosions that occurred in September in the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which connect Russia and Germany, resulting in gas being released into the Baltic Sea.
