Iran Ready to Implement Prisoner Swap Agreement with Washington

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian announced today, Thursday, that the country is ready to implement the agreement mediated by Qatar with the United States, under which Washington will release five prisoners in exchange for the same number from Tehran, in addition to the release of six billion dollars of Iranian assets held in South Korea.

On August 10, the outlines of the U.S.-Iran agreement were announced, which will allow American detainees held by Iran to leave in exchange for transferring funds to banks in Qatar and the release of five Iranians detained in the United States.

Iranian state media reported that Abdollahian praised Qatar’s constructive role during phone conversations with his Qatari counterpart, which led to months of negotiations culminating in the agreement.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stated that the process of transferring the released Iranian funds to Qatari banks will take place soon, possibly next week.

Washington issued a sanctions waiver to allow the transfer of six billion dollars of Iranian funds from South Korea to Qatar, which will oversee how Tehran spends that money to ensure it is used for purchasing humanitarian goods. A spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the implementation of the agreement is expected to occur in the coming days.
