Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko stated on Wednesday that "Kyiv will not enter into negotiations with Russia regarding the renewal of the Russian gas transit contract on its territory, which is set to expire next year." Halushchenko pointed out that "there is a high possibility that there will be no demand for Russian gas in European countries." He was quoted by Voice of America saying, "We will see next year if Europe can continue without Russian gas at all." Russia has indicated that it will consider extending the contract, which allows it to send gas to Europe through Ukrainian territory, beyond 2024 if the European Union—which has pledged to completely stop relying on Russian gas by 2027—still needs gas supplies.
