Gunmen Open Fire on Villagers in Manipur, India, Killing Three

Officials stated on Tuesday that at least three people were killed and five seriously injured when gunmen in camouflage opened fire on villagers in the troubled northeastern state of Manipur, as violence continues to spread in the region. At least 180 people have died following violent clashes between the majority Meitei ethnic group and the minority Kuki group after a court order indicated that benefits granted to the Kuki minority would also be available to the Meitei group. The latest wave of violence occurred in the Lilong area of Thoubal on Monday when a group in camouflage randomly fired upon local residents. A senior police official told Reuters over the phone, "Three people died from gunshot wounds, and five are being treated in the hospital for various injuries." No information has yet been released regarding the identities of the victims or the suspects behind the attack. Authorities have reinstated a curfew in Thoubal and four surrounding areas since Monday evening.
