Security personnel detained Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, after he protested against Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's speech during the UN General Assembly session.
Before leaving the assembly hall during Raisi's address, Erdan held up a photo of Mahsa Amini, who was killed by Iranian police in 2022, with the message "Iranian women deserve freedom now!"
As soon as he exited the hall, security officials guarding the UN building stopped him and released him after a short detention.
In a statement posted on his X account (formerly Twitter), Erdan condemned the international community for providing a platform to Raisi, whom he described as a "murderous tyrant" and "butcher of Tehran." He added that he "left the hall to make it clear that Israel stands with the Iranian people" and called on the international community to "stop the madness and prevent killers and anti-Semites from speaking before the United Nations."
It is noteworthy that Ebrahim Raisi delivered his speech during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, which opened in New York on Tuesday. In his speech, Raisi attacked the United States, blaming it for global instability.
