Toyota's stock fell by 5.6% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange before closing down 4% following the announcement that the Japanese automotive giant is recalling approximately one million vehicles from the Toyota and Lexus brands in the United States due to an airbag issue. According to the recall notice published on Toyota's website, the sensors in the front passenger seat of the affected vehicles may have a manufacturing defect that could cause an electrical short circuit. The company stated that "this defect prevents the device from properly assessing the weight of the passenger and may result in the airbag not deploying as intended in certain accidents, increasing the risk of injury." The models affected by the recall date from 2020 to 2022 and include popular Toyota SUV models such as the RAV4 and Highlander, as well as the Corolla and Camry.
