Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani stated on Monday that Iran considers the allegations of its involvement in an attack that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border to be "baseless." Kanaani also noted that the continued U.S. strikes on Syria and Iraq, as well as the war in Gaza, will only exacerbate instability in the region.
President Joe Biden accused Iran-allied groups of being responsible for the drone attack on U.S. forces, which is the first to result in American casualties since the outbreak of war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic resistance movement (Hamas) in October, with repercussions felt throughout the Middle East. Kanaani stated that "resistance groups" do not receive orders from Iran.
Earlier, Iran's mission to the United Nations issued a statement affirming that "Iran has no connection or relation to the attack on the American base." They added, "There is a conflict between U.S. forces and resistance factions in the region, which are responding with retaliatory attacks." The attack marks a significant escalation in an already tense situation in the Middle East, where the war in Gaza erupted following Hamas's assault on Israel.
