Scholz Criticizes European Union Countries for Weak Military Support to Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Monday that "the majority of European Union countries are not providing enough weapons to support Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion, calling on allies to strengthen their efforts." He emphasized the importance of Europe's role currently, as U.S. military aid has paused pending congressional approval, reiterating previous statements confirming the German government's continued support for Kyiv as long as it remains necessary. Berlin is currently one of the largest providers of weapons and financial support to Kyiv. Late last year, it agreed to double military aid to Ukraine in 2024 to eight billion euros (8.8 billion dollars). Scholz said at a press conference in Berlin: "Despite the importance of Germany's contribution, it will not be sufficient to ensure Ukraine's long-term security." He urged allies in the European Union to "intensify their efforts towards Ukraine, as the planned shipments of weapons to Ukraine from the majority of EU member states are not enough." Scholz revealed that "Berlin has asked the EU to consult with member states regarding planned deliveries, in case not all are known." The German Chancellor expressed confidence that the EU would approve the proposed aid package of 50 billion euros for Ukraine at an emergency summit on February 1.
