The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that the number of migrants to the United Kingdom reached a new record that surpassed all expectations. The figures released by the office revealed that, by December 2022, migration estimates hit a record high of 745,000 people. The previous estimate for the year ending December 2022 was 606,000, but the ONS has since revised this figure upward in light of "unexpected patterns" in migrant behavior. The new figures also disclosed that "net migration to the UK reached 672,000 in the year up to June 2023, an increase from 607,000 in the previous 12 months." This increase has largely been attributed to 1.2 million migrants being granted visas from outside the European Union to enter the UK for study, work, or to escape conflict or persecution. The ONS estimates that 508,000 people migrated.
