U.S. special envoy for Iran, Abram Paley, met yesterday, Friday, with the family of Iranian-German citizen Jamshid Sharmahd, who was sentenced to death in February in Iran after being convicted of leading a royalist group accused of a bombing in 2008 that resulted in fatalities. The special envoy, Abram Paley, shared a photo with Sharmahd's son and daughter, Shayan and Ghazaleh, on "X," stating, "I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet Jamshid Sharmahd's family. He should never have been held in Iran, and we hope to see the day he reunites with his loved ones."
In response to this post, Ghazaleh, Sharmahd's daughter, indicated to Paley that she needed "action," and that her father should be included in any agreement reached for the release of American citizens. She added, "We will continue to urge the Biden administration to work with all parties to not abandon anyone imprisoned or to halt negotiations with my father's captors."
Jamshid Sharmahd, who also holds residency in the United States, was arrested in 2020, and the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence at that time described him as the "leader of the Tondar terrorist group, which orchestrated armed and terrorist acts in Iran from America." The Tondar group, which is not widely known and is based in Los Angeles, claims to seek the restoration of the Iranian monarchy that was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The group operates radio and television stations opposing the Iranian government abroad.
