The Egyptian Ministry of the Interior announced the seizure of an island planted with drugs in the heart of the Nile, belonging to a village in the Abnoub Police Center in Asyut, one of the southern governorates of the country. The ministry stated that "security agencies received information about several individuals growing drugs on an island in the Nile." Investigations revealed that "16 highly dangerous individuals were cultivating and trafficking drugs on a Nile island linked to a village in the Abnoub Police Center in Asyut Governorate."
It added that "upon targeting them, they opened fire at the forces, resulting in the injury of one of them while the others were apprehended," noting that "6.5 tons of cannabis was seized, along with 10 acres planted with both opium and cannabis, 16 automatic rifles, 51 magazines, and a large number of bullets." The ministry announced that "the financial value of the seized narcotics amounted to approximately 36.5 million Egyptian pounds," confirming that "all individuals were arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution, which took over the investigation."
In continuation of the ongoing security strikes against drug traffickers, and recognizing the danger this criminal activity poses to society, especially the youth, the Ministry of the Interior emphasized the importance of protecting them from the traps of addiction.
