Manchester United regained their winning rhythm in the Premier League today, Saturday, with a 2-0 victory over their guest Everton in the 28th round. The last time the Red Devils won in the Premier League was on February 18 against Luton Town, after which they lost to Fulham 1-2 and Manchester City 1-3.
Manchester United scored both of their goals from the penalty spot, through Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford in the 12th and 36th minutes, respectively. With this result, the Red Devils increased their tally to 47 points in sixth place, while Everton remained at 25 points in sixteenth place.
Everton showed danger early on, but United's goalkeeper Onana was alert and caught the ball before Godfrey could put it in the net. The visitors threatened the Cameroonian keeper's goal again with a powerful volley from McNeil, but it went off target. United had their first chance after a corner taken from the left side that Varane met with a header, but Pickford had no difficulty in saving it.
Garnacho earned a penalty ten minutes into the match after being fouled, with Fernandes successfully converting it to put the hosts ahead. Onana made a great save from a powerful shot by McNeil from outside the box, with the rebound falling to Doucoure, who shot over the bar.
Bruno took a free kick on the edge of the penalty area with a fantastic shot, but Pickford brilliantly prevented it from reaching the net. Everton's defenders once again put their team in a difficult position, giving away another penalty that Garnacho earned after a foul by Godfrey, from which Rashford scored the second goal.
Before the end of the first half, Lindelof tried his luck with a long-range shot, but it lacked the strength and accuracy to break the net, ending the first half with United leading (2-0). Garnacho was close to adding a third goal for his team as he ran down the right inside the penalty area, but he oddly shot high over the net.
Onana continued to be a formidable wall against Everton's attacks, successfully saving a low shot from Doucoure from the left side inside the box. Garnacho wasted another clear chance as he received a silky cross from Bruno, but he failed to direct it towards the goal in a surprising manner.
After a corner, the ball reached Lindelof near the goal, who tried to nudge it into the net, but Pickford saved it twice just as Evans attempted to intervene, earning the guest goalkeeper a free kick due to the foul. Everton nearly reduced the score after the ball bizarrely went past Calvert-Lewin, who failed to meet it with a touch into the net.
Amadou Onana attempted an acrobatic kick from the edge of United's penalty area, but the home goalkeeper had no difficulty in catching the ball. Everton's pressure continued relentlessly in the final minutes, with Calvert-Lewin rising for a header from a corner, directing a weak header that settled in Onana's hands. The Cameroonian goalkeeper continued to make key saves, clearing a powerful shot from Andre Gomes inside the area, as the remaining minutes passed without further changes.
