Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi announced that at the end of the nomination period for the 14th presidential elections, the number of applicants has reached 80 individuals. At this stage, the Guardian Council, consisting of 12 members, has a period of no more than seven days to confirm the eligibility of the candidates to run in the elections or reject their nominations, based on specific criteria. The list of qualified candidates will be published on June 11.
Campaigning for the final candidates will begin on June 12 and will last for 16 days, with the elections scheduled for June 28 through direct public voting. Among the most notable candidates for the Iranian presidency are Ali Laijani, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Saeed Jalili, and Abdolnasser Hemmati, among others. It was announced that on May 20, 2024, President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials died in a helicopter crash while returning from the Khodafarin region on the shared border with Azerbaijan towards Tabriz.
