"Lady of the Mountain": With What Legal Authority Does Hezbollah Claim the Right to Decide War and Peace?

The "Lady of the Mountain" gathering, in its weekly meeting held both in-person and online in Ashrafieh, accused the "Lebanese authority, specifically the Presidents of the Parliament and the Council of Ministers, of placing the Lebanese people, particularly those in the south, in the eye of the storm of killing, destruction, and displacement. This blatant abandonment of their primary duty to defend the security and interests of the Lebanese is made apparent through their full and public support for the Hezbollah-Iran militia in its declared and ongoing war solely to support Gaza. As if these leaders represent only Iranian interests and not Lebanese ones!"

The attendees asked in a statement: "With what legal authority does Hezbollah give itself the right to make decisions regarding war and peace, putting all of Lebanon and the Lebanese at risk of death and destruction? Isn't this decision supposed to be made by the Lebanese Parliament and government? Where are these presidents, ministers, and MPs regarding everything that is happening? Hezbollah has revealed through this declared war its loyalty and service to Iranian occupation interests and its strategy in the region. The attendees note that Lebanon and the Lebanese are the first to pay the price of this decision with their blood and properties!"

The statement added: "Furthermore, the attendees emphasize that the verbal objection from the parliamentary opposition does not absolve them of their responsibility to find solutions. These gentlemen MPs must be committed to implementing the constitution in action and not just in words, and demand that the complicit government fulfill its responsibilities towards all Lebanese. They should also communicate directly with Arab and international decision-making circles to affirm the confiscation of Lebanese sovereign decision-making by Iranian occupation and to demand that these circles work on implementing international resolutions, specifically 1559, 1680, and 1701 effectively."

In conclusion, it stated: "This week marks the 19th anniversary of the Independence Uprising in Lebanon, which remains essential, and the attendees send their respect to its martyrs and to the living as well, promising to continue the resistance to restore full sovereignty. Additionally, the gathering wishes all Lebanese a blessed Ramadan, may God return it to us all with peace and free decision-making."
