Argentina Reclaims Top Spot in FIFA Rankings Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Argentina's national football team has regained the top position in the FIFA World Rankings, released by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). This comes in the latest rankings ahead of the 2026 World Cup, marking the world champions' return to the summit after being absent since July 2025.

Argentina's rise to the top followed victories in their recent friendly matches, which provided a significant boost in the global rankings and allowed them to surpass France, which has slipped to third place.

Meanwhile, Spain holds onto the second spot after achieving positive results during the recent international break, remaining in contention for the top spot as the global football showcase approaches.

The new rankings also mark a historic achievement for Morocco, reaching the seventh rank worldwide, the highest in its history since the global ranking system was adopted in 1993, overtaking several major European teams.

Several other nations showed notable progress, including Mexico climbing to fourteenth place and Uruguay advancing to sixteenth. Iran also made it into the world's top twenty by securing the twentieth position.

Conversely, some teams have experienced a drop in the rankings, with Senegal and the USA each falling one place, while Serbia registered one of the largest declines among leading teams.

On the positive front, Hungary, Chile, and China each moved up three spots, while Lebanon saw one of the most significant drops, losing seven places.

FIFA confirmed that the June 2026 rankings will hold additional importance during the World Cup, as they will be used as a tie-breaker for teams equal on points and could determine the best third-place finishers if ties persist after applying the primary criteria.

As the World Cup approaches, the current rankings provide an initial glimpse of the balance of power among the top teams, with contenders eager to affirm their readiness on the field and convert ranking success into actual achievements during the tournament.
