U.S. President Donald Trump pledged on Wednesday to give $5,000 to every adult American if the Republican Party retains control of both houses of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections scheduled for November.
Speaking at a Republican rally in Dallas, Texas, Trump announced, "If Republicans win, you win with us, and you'll get $5,000," adding that this payment would be called "Trump Dividends."
The President did not specify the source of the funds for these payments or the mechanism for implementing this proposal.
Trump's remarks come at a time when Republicans face significant competition from Democrats ahead of the midterms, which will determine the congressional power dynamics.
Trump Mobilizes for Elections
The President urged voters to support Republicans, warning that control shifting to Democrats would, in his words, set the United States back for years.
He promised to buck the historical trend where the incumbent president's party often loses seats during the midterms, affirming that Republicans will continue to "get the job done."
Trump criticized previous administrations for "killing and burying the American dream," asserting that his administration is working to tackle the rising cost of living crisis.
He praised House Speaker Mike Johnson, while his mention of Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune met with some booing from the crowd, but Trump insisted Thune is "working hard."
Trump also addressed immigration, sharply criticizing Democrats for their border policies and reiterating his pledge to tighten measures against illegal immigration.
