The Lebanese parliament convened at 11 AM today for its first government accountability session, following an invitation from Speaker Nabih Berri. At the start of the session, Berri requested a moment of silence in honor of the late former MP Dory Chamoun.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salaam addressed the parliament, delivering a "candid statement" to reflect the country's true state and the government's efforts in tackling ongoing challenges.
Prime Minister Salaam remarked, "We have repeatedly warned against the perils of engaging in the region's ongoing conflict, urging prudence and thoughtful decision-making to safeguard the country and its citizens."
He noted the World Bank's estimation of the first conflict's total cost at around $14 billion, stating that "the recent war's direct cost is preliminarily estimated between $3 and $4 billion."
The Prime Minister emphasized that despite significant challenges, the government has fulfilled its responsibilities, assuring that "although the tough living conditions are a result of compounded crises, we are determined to confront these issues and will not succumb."
Comments Before the Session
Prior to the session, MP Marwan Hamadeh declared, "The government and presidency are red lines, nobody should attempt to breach them, despite attempts to drag us back to the hell we strive to escape."
MP Ghassan Atallah added, "As the sole opposition, we are surprised by those within the government seeking to object to it."
Meanwhile, Ali Khreis asserted that Hezbollah will not withdraw from the government and continues its dissent.
Industry Minister George Assi Khoury commented, "I do not foresee a majority favoring the government's collapse. The Energy Minister has done excellent work and is prepared to answer any questions posed today."
