UN Security Council Briefing on Yemen: Promoting Dialogue

The Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, affirmed during an open briefing session of the Security Council that acts of violence have significantly decreased despite the end of the truce seven months ago. He pointed out that there is a desire among the conflicting parties to engage in negotiations that could improve the economic and humanitarian situations under the auspices of the United Nations. The envoy praised the role of Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the need for decisive steps toward a peaceful and comprehensive solution. He called on the Yemeni parties to release all arbitrarily detained individuals. Meanwhile, Yasmin Al-Aryani (Yemen Center for Strategic Studies in Sana'a) spoke about the suffering experienced by her country, urging the Security Council to emphasize UN involvement, reduce the conflict, and open political avenues that fall under UN oversight. She mentioned that Yemenis who have suffered the ravages of war should conduct negotiations themselves, as they are most aware of their grievances. She warned against settlements that overlook transitional justice, fearing renewed conflict and revenge.
